I have the most wonderful Christmas memories of my Mother. She loved Christmas and always said “nothing is tacky at Christmas ~ anything and everything goes”! We would take car rides to see the lights and my Mother would clap her hands at every home we passed. I so wish I had her with me so she could see my home decorated. My son Dustin who is now 29 would be allowed to pick one ornament from Mother’s Christmas tree every year. I would try to steer him in the direction of the most beautiful ornament…..but he had to have the ones that looked old and worn. Many of those ornaments adorn our tree each year ~ a unique blend of old and new. For years Mother would buy kits and make her own ornaments ~ Bells, Christmas Trees, Santa, Little Houses, Reindeer with so many beads, glitter, ribbon…..just beautiful.
Yes….we had the “Silver Christmas Tree” with the light that would rotate and change colors….red, blue, green! We also had a fake fireplace made out of cardboard that we would hang our stockings from. Every year Mother would make my Dad put it up…..even though it had faded. Home Fires ~ they are the warmth and the light that sparks our imaginations, kindle our recollections of special people and places, and welcome us home ~ our fireplace did not need real fire ~ our Christmas was exceptional and celebrated traditions.
My Mother Margaret created Christmas magic. I appreciate this now as all the feelings of love come back to me. Nobody could do Christmas better!
Lord, may I truly value every moment spent with my loved ones while this life is so briefly mine.
